The AI Shortlist: The 10 Strategies That Put Your Brand in the Answer When Buyers Ask AI Who's Best

Find out why AI keeps
picking your competitors, not you.

All the lessons we learned are in The AI Shortlist.

✓

The kind of website AI trusts far more than your own

...and how a brand with a smaller site and a smaller budget used it to beat a brand with 100 excellent posts.

✓

Why "write better content" keeps failing when the reader is an AI

...and what AI checks instead, before it even picks a website to read.

✓

Why AI skipped some of our pieces every single time

...and the headline detail that decided it.

✓

How to tell whether a question can be won at all

...before you spend a single cent on it.

✓

Why the check you run on your own laptop can lie to you

...it can show your brand when your buyers don't see it, and hide it when they do.

What's at stake for your brand

All brands know buyers are coming from AI answers now.

What they don't know is how to get AI to pick them.

Reddit post in r/SEO: AI is recommending my competitors over me, what can I do to get AI recommending me?
X post by @upbeat_dev: One of the apps ChatGPT recommended ranks below mine in every country on the App Store, yet mine didn't even make the list.

Reddit post in r/SEO: What's the best and fastest way to get recommended on ChatGPT, and do people really buy from ChatGPT?
Reddit post in r/aeo: Why does ChatGPT recommend some companies I've never heard of instead of established brands?
Reddit post in r/smallbusiness: Tested if ChatGPT recommends my business (it doesn't). Same competitors. We weren't mentioned once.
BlackHatWorld thread: AI keeps recommending my competitors from one source. A small agency owner says ChatGPT seems to rely on a single directory, Clutch, to pick which local SEO companies it recommends.

You look for advice, and get the same list everyone else got.

The usual advice

Ask any expert how to get AI to pick you, and you'll hear some mix of these:

  • Write helpful content
  • Build authority
  • Get more reviews
  • Rank on Google first
  • Publish more often

This is how brands won on Google for years.

What our tests showed

We asked 4 AI engines what buyers ask, and studied the brands that kept getting picked over everyone else.

They were all doing the same 10 things.
None of the 10 are in the usual advice.

All 10 are in the book:

The tests also kept turning up things the usual advice can't explain:

Being famous gave a brand zero head start.

A brand everyone knows showed up in AI answers no more often than a brand nobody had heard of.

6 in 10 answers used our article and left the brand out.

AI took the facts from our article, wrote them into its answer, and dropped the brand's name.

50%+ of the brands were gone 6 hours later.

We asked the same question again that afternoon. More than half the brands in the morning's answer had disappeared.

Publishing more posts doesn't fix any of that.
A higher Google ranking doesn't either.

And what we found out was this:

AI isn't looking for the best business. It's looking for the answer least likely to make it look wrong.

Every one of the 10 strategies does the same job: make your brand the safe pick, one AI can check and trust.

We used what we found on our clients' brands

AI ignored these brands at first. Then it recommended them.

These are AEOFast clients. Every strategy we used on them is in the book, and now it's all yours.

ChatGPT answer to 'Best dental clinic for a smile makeover in Shah Alam', before and after: Ardent Dental Clinic Setia Alam appears first in the after answer
Gemini answer to 'Best AI help desk that drafts replies from customer conversation history', before and after: HelpRev becomes the first pick
Google AI Mode answer to 'Which plug-in hybrid SUV available in Poland has a four-motor all-wheel-drive system?', before and after: EXEED RX PHEV becomes the answer
Google AI Overview answer to 'Best 3D printing service for architectural scale models in Malaysia', before and after: Tweedy Essentials joins the list

What clients said after our team ran these strategies for them.

I tried it, it worked, and the campaign was published within a couple of days of paying. Simple.

I was skeptical… but AEOFast explained exactly how it works and got my brand mentioned.
OwnerOnline Specialty Food
I wanted to know what really happens behind the scenes, and AEOFast delivered. Two campaigns in and everything was handled on their end. That's exactly what I was hoping for. Thanks!
OwnerWeb Design and Local SEO Agency
Very simple. Our client showed up in AI results right after the first campaign went live. For an agency managing many profiles, that speed matters. Next we'll be watching how well it holds up.
PresidentSEO, PPC, and Web Design Agency
I don’t know much about AEO, but I know showing up on AI is getting more and more important, so I thought I’d give AEOFast a try and it actually worked, my clinic got mentioned. I literally barely have to do anything, it was so easy that I reached out and ask what else I need to do haha

A sneak peek at the 10 strategies.

Each one came out of what we tried on client brands, and the book shows you how to run every one.

1

The one word in a question that made AI 7-8x more likely to mention a brand, and why local businesses play by different rules.

2

The easy-looking question that can be the hardest one on your list, and the sign that tells you to walk away.

3

The kind of question that won half the time for our brands, while their broad questions won 1 in 5.

4

One kind of number that got a brand mentioned every time we asked, and the small words that make AI trust it less.

5

The common writing habit that hands AI your fact without your brand, and the swap that put the brand in every answer we tested.

6

The format AI cited more than 3x as often as the announcements most companies send, and the catch that comes with it.

7

What got Google's AI to cite us for the first time in our whole study, and the 4 problems we hit on almost every piece.

8

The 4 characters in a headline that made AI use a piece almost 2x as often, and why older pieces keep fading.

9

How a check said "not mentioned" while the brand was in the answer all along, and what every check has to look for.

10

Why a single check tells you almost nothing, and the only kind of result we trust.

Written for brands AI keeps passing over.

  • You're a founder or in-house marketer, and AI picks a newer rival with fewer reviews over you.
  • You rank on Google, but AI's answer goes to a competitor ranked below you.
  • You run an agency, and each client has to show up on 4 engines that pick their sources differently.
  • You run a local business, and AI often answers local questions from map listings, not your website.
  • You're already in some AI answers, and you want to stay there as rivals publish and engines change.
You've seen what works. Now choose.

You have two choices. Only one gets your brand onto the shortlist.

Choice #1

Keep doing what everyone else is doing.

Publish more posts, hope the usual advice works, and watch a competitor show up in the answer instead of you.

Choice #2

Wondering if it will work for you?

Do I need to be a big brand for this to work?

No. Size didn't decide who got picked in our tests, and the book shows what did.

Does it work for local businesses?

Yes. The book shows where local questions behave differently from everything else, and the one thing to check before you do anything else.

I already rank on page one of Google. Is this still for me?

Yes. Page-one brands still go missing from AI answers, and the book shows why.

Do I need AEOFast to use it?

No. Every strategy can be done by hand, and the book shows you how; it also points out where AEOFast can run a step for you.

Do I need a budget, special tools or technical skills?

You can start without a budget. Most of the work is writing and checking answers on the 4 engines (a VPN helps if your buyers are in another country). Spending only comes in later, for strategies that put your story on other websites.

How long does it take to read and act on?

You can read it in one sitting and start on the first strategy the same day.

What happens after my brand shows up in an answer?

Results can fade over time. The last chapter covers what pushes a brand out and how to stay ahead of it.
